CUMBERLAND — Following an alleged home invasion early Sunday morning in central Cumberland County, a Prince Edward resident is behind bars.

Tyrone Douglas Morton, of Prince Edward, has seven charges filed against him in Cumberland Juvenile and Domestic Relations and General District Court in relation to the incident this past weekend.

At roughly 5 a.m. Sunday morning, April 27, the Cumberland Sheriff’s Office received a call, alleging that someone had broken into a residence on Jenkins Church Road, wielding knives, according to the sheriff’s office. A man and woman were in the residence at the time and were able to flee.

According to police, the cause of the incident is because of a domestic dispute between the female homeowner and Morton, the alleged intruder.

No one was injured, according to police.

According to the deputy who responded, when he arrived at the residence, no one was home. The suspected intruder was apprehended later that day in Prince Edward County with the help of Prince Edward County Sheriff’s Office, according to the deputy.

The charges filed against Morton include two felony counts, one for armed burglary and the other for attempted malicious wounding. Five misdemeanor counts were also filed, including two counts of petit larceny for stealing two cell phones, one for trespassing after being forbidden to do so, one for damaging property (including a door and two walls in the residence), and one for harassment by computer.

Morton is currently in custody at Piedmont Regional Jail. He is scheduled to appear in court May 1. Prior to that court date no bond had been set.
