A bomb threat at the Prince Edward County Courthouse was reported Thursday morning prompting an investigation, but no bomb was found.
The bomb was called into the General District Court Clerk Office at approximately 9:08 a.m. Thursday, Prince Edward County Public Information Officer Kate Pickett Eggleston said, prompting an immediate evacuation of the courthouse, the Farmville Town Hall and surrounding businesses.
“The Sheriff’s Office notified the Virginia State Police immediately and asked for the deployment of the explosive detection canines,” Eggleston said in a statement.
Virginia State Police and the explosive detection canines, after investigating the courthouse, determined they could not find a bomb.
While police investigated the courthouse, roads surrounding the area were blocked off from traffic.
The courthouse remained closed Thursday and reopened Friday. All employees in the courthouse were sent home for the day Thursday, Eggleston said.
