James River Brewery, located in Scottsville, is looking to bring award-winning brews to North Main Street.

The brewery is set to be located at 701 N. Main Street, at the site of the former J.R.’s Laundromat.

Shannon Brown, manager of James River Brewery in Scottsville, said the brewery is expected to open in June at the earliest. He noted delays in the construction of the building.

“We’re looking forward to coming down to Farmville,” Brown said.

He said the brewery is expected to have 10 beers on tap at any one time. He said the brewery is expected to produce fewer than 500 barrels a year.

Brown spoke about some of the brews that have won awards, including an award for a competition in northern California for its River Runner, an Extra Special / Strong Bitter (ESB) brew.

“We have the River Runner, we have a blonde, so many,” Brown said about the beers customers most enjoy. “We’ve got a couple of good lagers out. My top selling beer actually is the Fluvanna Fluss, which is a Hefeweizen, and the Tuber IPA.”

He noted Third Street Brewing in the town, and said he heard a lot of good things about it and would be open to collaborate.

He said the brewery location would have a game room in addition to cold brews. He said participants can enjoy pool tables, a pinball machine and other games.

“It’s going to be a relaxed atmosphere, you know,” Brown said. “We want everyone to just come in and relax, enjoy the beers and have a great time.”

Brown told people not to expect any late nights, however.

“We won’t be open late,” Brown said. “We’ll close fairly early. Because we do not want to be classified as a bar because we are not a bar. If you run into the late nights, then you run into a little bit of a problem.”

He said the brewery is looking to hire approximately 10 employees in town. The only person who would come to the brewery from the Scottsville location, he said, is the brewer, Blake Sherman.
