Three Mac desktop computers were donated to the Appomattox County School System’s Information and Technology class. Under the direction of their instructor, “Coach” Jason Clark, the students refurbished these computers back to perfect working order and then decided to donate them to the Appomattox County Historical Society for use in the Old Jail Museum & Library at 337 Court St. in Courthouse Square. The society will use these computers for historical and genealogy research by members and the general public. The society is in possession of an extensive amount of genealogy records of families from Appomattox County that was collected through family donations over the years. Records are still being collected and being added to those files. Due to a fire at the Courthouse in the late 1800s, all of the original records were destroyed, so members of the society decided to collect, preserve, and have available records for future generations. With the addition of these three Mac computers, the society can start to digitize these genealogy and other records, including many reels of microfilm into a database that can be accessed by all, rather than subjecting the family records, written on parchments and family Bibles to wear and tear. The Appomattox County Historical Society will be looking for new members and volunteers to help undertake this massive project.
