Jim Davis, interim superintendent of Piedmont Regional Jail (PRJ), was promoted to a permanent position as superintendent following a vote by the Piedmont Regional Jail Authority (PRJVA) during its meeting Wednesday.

The motion, made by PRJVA representative Parker Wheeler, moved Davis from a temporary status as administrator to a full-time administrator.

Davis will have a two-year contract with the jail.

The promotion will come “with a succession in mind, and possibly looking for an assistant for succession when the time is there,” Wheeler said.

Davis addressed the board following the vote.

“It’s really an honor to be here,” Davis said. “I’ve seen changes already. It’s slow, but we’re making them.”

Donald Hunter retired as Piedmont Regional Jail’s superintendent in February.

In an earlier Herald report, when asked whether Hunter’s retirement was due to the memorandum from Robinson, Farmer, Cox Association — which cited misappropriation, excessive spending and purchasing items that were uncharacteristic for a jail — PRJVA Board Chairman Jimmy Garnett said he could not comment.
