Working together

We’re probably all familiar with stories in the news about businesses and governments at all levels being at odds for various reasons. Consequently, it is nice to be able to highlight a story of the two working in concert together, with the government aiming to protect the reasonable interests of businesses, helping them, their customers and the overall economy of the locality.

This story unfolded Tuesday at a special meeting of the Prince Edward County Board of Supervisors. County Administrator Wade Bartlett helped lay the groundwork that led to the board adopting a resolution asking the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to amend its design of the proposed roundabout at the U.S. Route 15/State Route 692 (Kingsville) intersection.

A revised design VDOT presented at a public hearing April 19 did not allow full ingress/ egress for The Fishin’ Pig and the Hampden-Sydney Citgo convenience store located on the eastern side of U.S. Route 15. This design would make it quite difficult for delivery trucks and customers to get to the businesses. Bartlett and property owners both made their concerns known to VDOT. He told the board of supervisors Tuesday that VDOT staff assures “us that they will adjust their design, but we feel it prudent that we present this resolution to VDOT so that they are clear in our understanding of what it is that the business owners and the county would like.”

Near the conclusion of the resolution, it states, that “the board of supervisors has complete confidence that VDOT will take the appropriate action to amend the design of the roundabout to ensure that full ingress/egress access from both the northbound and southbound lanes of U.S. 15, as well as VA 692, is provided to Tax Parcel #050 A 89 and Tax Parcel #050 A 90A, located on the eastern side of U.S. 15; …”

The board unanimously adopted the resolution.
