Buckingham County Farm Bureau and Buckingham County Middle School FFA were thrilled to partner with Agriculture in the Classroom to celebrate the eighth annual Agriculture Literacy Week, March 6-10. During this week, volunteers from across the state participated by serving as guest readers in preschool through third grade classrooms where they read Agriculture in the Classroom’s 2018 Book of the Year, “These Bees Count” by Alison Formento. Each classroom had middle school students conduct several reading comprehension activities to extend the lesson and reinforce the covered agricultural concepts. This week is routinely recognized by special proclamation from the governor and offers students a fun and educational opportunity to learn more about farming and the source of their food. Additionally, the event connects teachers and schools to resources in their community. Past readers have included the first lady of Virginia, Virginia’s Secretary of Agriculture, and many more dedicated members of the agriculture community.

Spring plant sale is now in bloom at the Buckingham County High School Greenhouse. Annual flowers and vegetables are available. The greenhouse is open Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. through May 15. Contact Casey Davis at (434) 969-6100 ext. 102 for more information.

The Historic Village at Lee Wayside is now open on the weekends for tours. On May 12, it will host MAYFEST, a countywide celebration of Buckingham County from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Features include live music, buggy rides, great food, vendors, state parks, Friends of the Library’s basket raffle, kid’s area and much more. The next meeting of the Curdsville Community Center will be Monday at 6:30 p.m. The program will be presented by Spencer Adams. His topic will be on the various collections he and his late wife accrued over many years. Adams will bring some interesting examples for show and tell. Everyone is invited, bring a favorite covered dish or dessert. The Center is located at 122 School Road, Route 633 just off U.S. Route 15.
