Junior Kaylynn “Bug” Batten, pictured above, and the rest of the Longwood University softball team bring their 2018 regular season to a close with a home doubleheader Saturday against Duke University at 1 p.m., looking to extend their winning streak from five to seven games.
The Lancers (35-14, 17-4 Big South) have enjoyed a stellar run this year and were in second place in the Big South Conference right behind Liberty University (41-12, 15-3 Big South) entering Friday. On Friday, the Flames began a three-game series against Winthrop University, the outcome of which will affect whether Longwood or Liberty finishes with the top seed in the conference.
The Lancers have won all seven of their conference series this year.
Longwood has five players batting above the .300 mark after not having a single player bat above .300 a season ago. Leading the way this year is Batten with a .376 average, followed by redshirt junior Karleigh Donovan (.333), sophomore Destiny Martinez (.317), junior Jessica Smith (.303) and sophomore Kasey Carr (.302).
