Lady Knights off to a promising start

Buckingham County High School’s varsity softball team has not gotten as many games in as it usually has by this point in the spring, but the Lady Knights have continued to show potential, starting 4-3.

“It’s been messed up weather- wise for us,” Buckingham Head Coach Mark Christian said. “It just seems like it’s always falling on the wrong day. It’s going to kill us later on with the schedule, I can see that coming. It’ll just make it harder on us.”

The Lady Knights, who feature six returners and six players that Christian calls “newbies,” opened the season March 15 with an 8-0 road victory over Central Lunenburg High School. Four days later, Buckingham fell 13-1 at home to Appomattox County High School.

The Lady Knights returned from spring break to hand host Bluestone High School a 13-0 defeat April 10.

Reflecting on the Appomattox game, Christian said, “We just didn’t show up the way we should have, but the other two games, we played the way that we’re supposed to be able to play.”

Buckingham benefits this year again from the talents of senior left-handed pitcher Emily Gormus and sophomore right-handed pitcher Mia Garrett. Other returners include junior center fielder Jayda Chambers, sophomore Alivia Newton, who has played at shortstop this year, senior Brandy Snoddy, who is playing a lot at second base, and senior Raven Morgan, who has moved from third base to catcher and has been doing well, Christian said.

He also noted that Gormus, Morgan and Newton had been swinging the bat particularly well. The Lady Knights were scheduled to visit Nottoway High School on Thursday, and they will visit Appomattox for a rematch on Monday at 5 p.m.
