Club Learns What's Growing At PECPS

The Nora Lancaster Garden Club met on Tuesday, February 18, at the home of Mrs. Martha Alice Thompson with Mrs. Francis Pairet as co-hostess.
Dr. David Smith, superintendent, Prince Edward County Public Schools, presented the program entitled “An Overview of Horticulture and Other Neat Stuff at Prince Edward County Public Schools.” Dr. Smith discussed the horticulture classes at the high school and turf grass improvements to the football field completed during the summer of 2013. He also discussed full District Accreditation by AdvanceED (formally SACS) for all three schools, the successful completion of the three-year high school turnaround initiative, the implementation of the Leader in Me Program at the elementary school, and academic partnerships with Longwood University, Hampden-Sydney College and Southside Virginia Community College.
The artistic exhibits for February were entitled: “Tiny Treasures”, a miniature or small arrangement. Receiving blue ribbons were: Jane Clark, Betty Colemen, Jane Crute, Inge Hrubos, Lazelle Jackson, Becky Kelly and Barbara Smith. Houseplants were exhibited in Horticulture. Receiving blue ribbons were: Betty Coleman, Becky Kelly, Judy O’Steen and Barbara Smith and receiving a red ribbon was Inge Hrubos.
