The Longwood Wind Symphony and Jazz Ensembles will combine for their annual semester- ending concert Tuesday, April 17, at 7:30 p.m. in Jarman Auditorium on the Longwood University campus.
Each of the groups will feature a number of student soloists and conductors. Opening the concert will be the 45-member Wind Symphony, conducted by Dr. Gordon Ring. They will begin with a performance of Ring’s “Concert Variations on Deo Gracias.”
Piccolo soloist Ellie Swanson, a sophomore music education and performance double major from Prince Edward County High School will play August Damm’s “Through the Air,” and Kirsten Vis, a senior music major from Tabb High School, will conduct “Havendance” by David Holsinger.
Swanson and Vis were chosen to perform by winning the student soloist and conductor competitions held last fall. The Wind Symphony will close their part of the program with “Make Our Garden Grow” by Leonard Bernstein and the march “America Exultant” by Henry Fillmore.
After a short intermission the second group to perform will be the Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Dr. Charles Kinzer. Their program will include three jazz works by Dr. Gordon Ring. Numerous soloists will be featured including senior music major Cory Anderson on the flugelhorn feature, “Softly.” Admission to the concert is free and the public is invited.
