CONWAY, SC — Sophomore classmates Raven Williams/Richmond and Daeisha Brown/Richmond each logged 14 points, as the No. 10 Longwood University women's basketball team fell, 54-40, against No. 7 Presbyterian College (12-18) in a first-round game at the 2014 VisitMyrtleBeach.com Big South Women's Basketball Championship in Conway, SC. The teams battled back-and-forth for much of the contest with 12 lead changes, and were tied for the final time at 36-36, before the Blue Hose outscored the Lancers, 18-4, in the last seven minutes of play. Williams also paced Longwood on the glass with seven rebounds in the decision, while Keyonna Allen notched game highs of 16 points and nine rebounds to lead PC. Longwood finishes its 2013-14 campaign with an 8-22 overall record.

“This has been a much shorter trip than last year, but you have to give credit to Coach Fisher and Presbyterian,” said head coach Bill Reinson. “I know that PC is a team that not a lot of other teams want to play against because they are disciplined and play terrific basketball. Hats off to them because they turned in a good game, but I'm proud of my crew.”

Williams struck first for the Lancers with a big three from the wing to open the game, but PC took an early, 6-3 advantage at 17:48. Redshirt-senior Heather Tobeck/La Porte, Texas hit a second-chance jumper before the Blue Hose scored two consecutive buckets in the next three minutes to pull ahead, 10-6. The Lancers retaliated, however, as Williams knocked down back-to-back threes on the next two possessions and freshman Treasure Avery/Lincolnton, NC followed with a pull-up jumper to give the Lancers their first lead of the day at 14-12 with 8:11 remaining in the first half. The teams traded baskets and the lead and were tied on three more occasions in the half, including at 22-22 with just over a minute to go, but the Blue Hose hit the final field goal of the half with less than 30 seconds to go, taking a slight, 24-22 advantage into the break.

Coming out of halftime, the teams continued to fight for the upper hand, tying twice more in the first two minutes before Brown scored five-straight points, giving Longwood a 31-26 lead at 16:19. The Blue Hose quickly cut the Lancers' buffer back to just one, but sophomore Deborah Headen/Herndon drained a jumper to give Longwood a 33-30 edge with 13:45 remaining in the contest. After PC scored six of the next nine points, the final stalemate of the day came at 36-36 with 7:19 left. The Blue Hose then used five consecutive points from Karlee Taylor to spark the offense to life, putting together an 18-4 run in the final minutes of play to pull away and seal the 54-40 decision.

Brown added five boards to her 14 points in the decision. In addition to Williams and Brown, sophomore Khalilah Ali/Suffolk and Headen totaled four points apiece in the outing. As a team, the Lancers shot 26 percent (13-51) from the floor, including 18 percent (3-17) from beyond the arc, and 69 percent (11-16) from the line in the outing.

Aianna Kelly rounded out the double-digit scorers for the Blue Hose with 13 points on the day. She pulled down nine boards, as well. As a whole, Presbyterian shot 46 percent (17-37) from the field, 33 percent (2-6) from three-point territory and 67 percent (18-27) from the foul line.

Tuesday's contest marked the ninth meeting ever between Longwood and Presbyterian in the sport of women's basketball. The Lancers still hold a slim, 5-4 edge in the all-time series.
