Students in Emily Camden’s Animal Systems and Veterinary Science classes visited Boot Hill Dairy Farms for a guided tour of a day in the life of a dairy farmer. Students gained a full appreciation for the life cycle of a milk cow and the life of a dairy farmer. Students visited the nurseries and learned how technology is used to monitor feeding and growth rate as well as how data is used to determine the well-being of each cow. Tenth grader, Wade Jenkins, and his mother, Betsy Jenkins, led the tour of the family farm, and Wade provided demonstrations of the various machines he works with regularly. They also discussed how the animal feed is mixed for specific nutritional needs for each stage of a dairy cow’s life. The tour also included a visit to the milk parlor and demonstration of the sanitation and lagoon procedures.
