Congratulations to the Buckingham Middle School FFA Jr. Ag Mechanics teams. The Southeast Area Rally was held on Tuesday, March 2, at the Chesterfield Career and Technical Center at Hull in Chesterfield.
The Agricultural Mechanics event challenges students to explain and demonstrate safety practices, read and interpret directions, identify and use basic woodworking hand tools, select and use measuring devices, perform measuring skills and solve problems.
Members had to complete a written exam and measuring activity. They also had to identify tools and demonstrate their shop skills.
Team A, which consisted of Gwyneth Mitchell, Nathan Shippee, Daniel Farrish, and Holden Tyson, placed fifth overall. Team B, which consisted of Quintin Page, Jordan Johnston, Camden Allen, and Eli Bryant, placed third overall. Quintin Page also placed as the third highest individual in the event. Both teams were coached by Sherry Dorrier and Andrew Schmitt.

Virginia 4-H is still looking for host families for 17 Japanese youth (ages 12-15 years old) who are participating in the Summer Inbound States’ 4-H International Exchange program. The hosting period is four weeks from July 23-Aug. 18. Family must have a child of the same gender and within three years of the hosted youth (or they can host a chaperone). Based on a complete immersion model, each volunteer host family opens their home to an international youth who becomes a son or daughter for the summer.
No special activities need to be planned, as these youth want to experience American culture, make new friends and improve their English. Japanese youth are paired with a host sibling of the same gender and similar age and interests. If you want to know more, contact Virginia Cooperative Extension-Buckingham office at (434) 969-4261 or contact Eliza Seibert, the Virginia Coordinator for the States 4-H International Exchanges at va4hexchange@gmail. com or (540) 872-6680.
