Cumberland Library Notes Upcoming Events

The Cumberland County Library announces the following events and programs:
A Created Equal film and discussion series made possible by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Gildre Lehrman Institute, and the Bridging Cultures Initiative will be held in February and March. Documentaries will be shown Mondays, and Dr. Caroline Emmons, history professor at Hampden-Sydney College, will lead a discussion the following Tuesday evening.
Monday, Feb. 3 – film screening – 5 p.m. The Abolitionists; Tuesday, Feb. 4 – Discussion 5-6 p.m.;
Monday, Feb. 10, film screening – 6 p.m. Slavery by Another Name; Tuesday, Feb. 11 – Discussion 5-6 p.m.;
Monday, Feb. 24 – film screening – 6 p.m. The Loving Story; Tuesday, Feb. 25 – Discussion 5-6 p.m.;
Monday, March 3 – film screening – 6 p.m. Freedom Riders; Tuesday – March 4 – Discussion 5-6 p.m.
The films are also available to view free online, and will be amiable to borrow from the library’s collection. If there is not enough interest the library will screen the films more than once.
The Friends of the Library are also hosting their second Sweets in the Stacks benefit event on Saturday, Feb. 8, at 5 p.m. This benefit is a wonderful evening of sweet and savory treats, music, and raffles for multiple, wonderful donated items.
Volunteers from the AARP will be on hand this year to provide tax preparation at the Cumberland County Public Library on Mondays through tax season, beginning Feb. 3. Interested persons should call the library to make an appointment, 804-492-5807.
