Lady Eagles 4×400 wins state title

Prince Edward County High School’s girls 4×400-meter relay team led area student-athletes at Roanoke College last week by bringing home a state title in the Virginia High School League Class 2 indoor track and field state championships.

The 4×400 team featured senior Montiera Wynn, junior Jordan Book and sophomores Naomi Jones and Mia Seay and finished with a time of four minutes, 20.21 seconds.

The girls helped power the Prince Edward Lady Eagles overall indoor track and field team to a third-place finish at the state meet out of 31 teams to produce points. The Lady Eagles produced 41 points total.

Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School finished first with 98 points.

Among Prince Edward’s other standout performers was the Lady Eagles’ 4×200-meter relay team, which placed second. The team included Booker, Seay, junior Salma Muhammad and sophomore Makayla Morris and finished with a time of 1:52.77.

Morris finished third in the girls high jump with a 5-foot- 2-inch leap, and Muhammad finished third in the girls long jump with a 15-foot- 10.75-inch jump.

Leading the way for Cumberland County High School was senior Muhammad Fulani. He finished fourth in the boys 300-meter dash with a time of 37.45 seconds, fifth in the boys 500-meter run with a time of 1:11.20 and eighth in the boys triple jump with a 40-foot leap.

The Cumberland boys team finished in a five-way tie for 17th out of 34 teams to produce points.
