HAMPDEN-SYDNEY — Emory & Henry Head Coach David Willson '04 did not have a sweet homecoming as H-SC Basketball rolled past the Wasps 98-58 on Tuesday night. Despite falling two short of 100 points, Bojangles owner Jim Whitehead graciously elected to add two points to the score so everyone could buy one Boberry Biscuit and get one free at the Farmville Bojangles on January 8.
H-SC roared ahead 10-3 behind six points from Greg Lewis (Mechanicsville/Hanover) and four from Sasha Obradovic (Belgrade, Serbia/Hawaii Prep). Emory & Henry kept themselves in the game for several more minutes and trailed just 15-12 with 13:06 left in the half, but H-SC went on a 27-3 run over the next nine minutes and changed to go up 42-15 with 3:48 left in the first half. H-SC would go on to lead by as many as 48 points following intermission.
Lewis scored 20 points, going 4-4 from three and 8-10 overall. Stephen Vassor (Roanoke Rapids, NC/Brunswick) continued his strong play over winter break with 17 points (8-10 FGs) with seven rebounds. Obradovic contributed 10 points and seven boards while Khobi Williamson (Norfolk/Maury) also tacked on 10 points. Leon Hargrove (Raleigh, NC/Middle Creek) stuffed the stat sheet with nine points, seven assists, and four caroms while Alex Smith (Whitsett, NC/T. Wingate Andrews) had his strongest game of the season with eight points and five rebounds.
Malcolm Green led the Wasps with 13 points, six rebounds, and five steals while Stephen Brown contributed 10 points.
H-SC shot 58 percent overall and 55.6 percent from three, making 10-of-16 attempts from long range. Emory & Henry made 43.4 percent of their field goal attempts but shot just 27.8 percent from behind the arc. The Tigers held a 39-26 advantage on the glass and won the turnover battle, giving away the ball just 15 times while forcing 25 Wasp turnovers behind a stifling full-court press.
Hampden-Sydney travels to Harrisonburg on Saturday for a 7 p.m. game against the Royals of Eastern Mennonite University.
