Roland Carter Wood Jr.

Roland Carter Wood Jr., 85 of Buckingham, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2018 surrounded by his loving family and devoted caregivers. He is survived by his wife of 46 years Gloria S. Wood; daughter Courtney L. Whitt (Billy) of Manassas, VA; son R. Carter Wood, III (Charles) of Vienna, VA; grandsons Kyle and Joshua Whitt; siblings C. Jacqueline Mann (Kyle) of Waynesboro, VA, Claude H. Wood (Carol) of Portland, OR, and William A. Wood (Linda) of Wingina, VA; brother-in-law H. Shield Anderson of Dillwyn, VA; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents Roland C. Wood, Sr. and Eva Earle Horsley Wood and his sister Barbara Ann Anderson.

Roland was born on April 11, 1932. He was a 1949 graduate of Lovingston High School and 1953 graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. At Virginia Tech, Roland was a member of the Corps of Cadets and served five years in the United States Army where he was a paratrooper. In 1993, Roland retired from the United States Postal Service as the Postmaster of the Wingina, VA post office. He was a lifelong member of and deacon at Mulberry Grove Baptist Church. In his spare time, he raised beef cattle on his Wingina farmland and spent many Saturdays on the golf course. To all who knew him, Roland was quite the character… telling funny stories and making everyone laugh.

The family will receive friends on Friday, Jan. 26 from 6-8 p.m. at Mulberry Grove Baptist Church. A funeral service will be held Saturday, Jan. 27 at 11 a.m. at Mulberry Grove Baptist Church with interment immediately following at the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Roland’s honor to Mulberry Grove Baptist Church, 1095 Mulberry Grove Rd., Buckingham, VA 23921.
