PSR holds holiday event

Organizers and guests with Piedmont Senior Resources (PSR) donned colorful sweaters and raised their voices to sing during PSR’s Santa for Seniors event, held last Thursday at the new site on 1413 S. Main St.
The event was held to kick off PSR’s involvement with the 2017 Subaru Share the Love Event, where a variety of events and fundraisers will go toward donating goods to elderly members of the community who are shut-in or who may not have the resources or transportation to buy necessities.
Organizers encouraged participants to donate laundry baskets full of blankets, hair care products, hygiene products, towels and hand towels, socks, warm hats, laundry detergent and soaps.
PSR Executive Director Justine Young said that the products provide elderly members of the community with necessary items to get them through the winter, and PSR is planning to donate hundreds of laundry baskets with items that many elderly members of the community may not have otherwise.
“We participate in that grant,” Young said. “We will be delivering … laundry baskets full of items to homebound seniors.”
PSR was awarded a $15,026.65 grant from The Share the Love program from Subaru in April in which the vehicle company donates a percentage of its vehicle sales to four nonprofits around the country whose service exemplifies the dealership’s message of spreading love.
PSR was a member of one nonprofit, Meals on Wheels, and received the grant.
PSR crafted more than 325 gift baskets for its elderly clients last year, according to a previous Herald report.
Live music was a prominent feature of the event. Carolers included students from Longwood University and members of the community. Prince Edward County Commonwealth’s Attorney and Heart of Virginia Christmas Mother Megan Clark and Prince Edward County School Board Chair Sherry Honeycutt were among those who sang holiday carols and gospel selections, including a rendition of “O Holy Night.”
Perry Carrington, deacon of Jericho Baptist Church, performed on the keyboard and Eli Hall, Fuqua School student, played the saxophone.
Participants were also able to tour the PSR building, enjoy finger foods and enjoy one another’s company.
