Making her second straight start in just her second game at the Division I level, Longwood University junior forward Kristina Antonenko erupted onto the scene by matching Longwood’s all-time D-I scoring record with a game-high 33 points Tuesday morning as the Lancers fell to North Carolina Central University 87-75 at McDougald-McLendon Arena.
Antonenko finished the afternoon 14-of-20 from the floor to go along with five rebounds and a steal in 34 minutes of playing time. She was joined in double figures by senior forward Autumn Childress who collected her first double-double of the season with 16 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
“Kristina and Autumn were terrific offensively,” said Longwood Head Coach Bill Reinson. “It’s a shame we wasted their efforts.”
Antonenko is a junior college transfer who played her first two college basketball seasons for first-year Longwood Assistant Coach Antwon Harris at Highland Community College.
“My teammates deserve a lot of credit for my individual performance today,” Antonenko said.
The home opener for the Lancers (0-2) is Saturday at noon against University of Massachusetts Lowell.
