Students from Cumberland and Buckingham County Public Schools received recognition for creative posters from the Peter Francisco Soil and Water Conservation Districts’ (PFSWCD) 2017 poster contest.
According to a news release, first place winners in each category at the local level received a $75 gift card while second place winners in each category received a $50 gift card and third place winners in each category were given a $25 gift card.
Staff from the Buckingham Cooperative Extension served as judges for the year, the released cited.
The theme of the posters revolved around healthy soil, according to the release.
“Did you know that one handful of healthy soil has more living organisms than there are humans on planet earth?” The release cited. “Most of these organisms are bacteria which help decompose organic matter to make the soil nice and rich. Soil bacteria is also used to make antibiotics, anti-fungal, anti-cancer and antidepressant medicines. So while soil
may be at the bottom of the food chain, it is one of the cornerstones of life on Earth.”
