To celebrate October’s Hispanic Heritage Month, Fuqua School’s Spanish 3 class collaborated with the Lower School to practice their Spanish reading skills, their Spanish fluency and to teach the youngest Falcons why celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month is important. Upper School students selected popular picture books, recognized by many of the children, to read. However, these picture books were written in Spanish and were read to the students only in Spanish. This was not only a great opportunity for the Spanish 3 students to showcase their Spanish skills, but also a wonderful bonding experience for the Upper and Lower School students. Continuing the celebration, the Spanish 1 and 3 classes traveled to Longwood Center for the Visual Arts to view the John Parra exhibition. The students have been researching famous Hispanic people, so this exhibit was a wonderful opportunity to see the work of an award-winning Hispanic artist and children’s illustrator right here in Farmville. While at LCVA, the students toured the exhibit, critiqued art, read several of Parra’s books and looked for correlations between Parra’s work and what they have learned about Latino culture.
