Members of the Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) school board approved a new name for J.E.B Stuart High School during its Thursday meeting, according to a news release from the school system.
The final vote, Public Information Officer John Torre said, was 7 to 4 in favor of Justice High School.
The choice for Justice High School, school board Chair Jane Strauss said in the release, was due to the top choices for potential names submitted by Fairfax community members, including Barbara Rose Johns and Thurgood Marshall.
“It is important that our schools, in name and symbol, honor and value the diverse student population they serve today,” Strauss said in the release. “The name Justice High School honors our core belief in equity and inclusion, and individual heroes who fought for justice, civil rights and quality education including Colonel Louis G. Mendez, Jr., Barbara Rose Johns and Justice Thurgood Marshall.”
One board member was not present for the final vote, Torre said.
