Cumberland County High School’s varsity football team faced perhaps the best team in the James River District on Friday night in host Goochland High School and fell 49-7.

“We played hard,” Cumberland Head Coach Edgar Knapp said. “The kids didn’t quit through the whole game. We were a little overmatched. We did turn the ball over a couple times. We moved the ball well on offense.”

Quarterback Darius Kyle completed a 72-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Keyshawn Diming to help make the score 14-7 in the first quarter.

“But we stalled inside the 10-yard line a couple times again,” Knapp said. “We’re really struggling with our red zone offense. And we really had a hard time stopping them. They’re pretty good. So, we struggled with them, no question. So, I think we played as well as we’ve played so far. We were just a little overmatched.”

He had been quite disappointed with his team’s defensive performance the week before, and there was positive development there.

“I think it was improved in a lot of ways, but we’ve still got a lot of work to do,” Knapp said.

He was pleased with the effectiveness of his team’s run game.

“Darron Ridley and K.J. Copeland both ran the ball pretty well,” he said.

Copeland had 14 carries for 52 yards and Ridley had 12 carries for 46 yards.

The Dukes (0-6) host Buckingham County High School (1-5) on Friday.
