Christine Whaley Sloan

Christine Whaley Sloan, 83, of Cumberland, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sept. 13th, 2017 at The Woodlands rehab facility in Farmville. Christine was born Dec, 9, 1933 in Blount County, Tennessee, a daughter of the late James and Sally Whaley.  She was the widow of Spencer L. Sloan, Jr.

Christine worked as a seamstress for Amelia Dress Company until her retirement. Sewing was her hobby as well as her profession and she spent much of her free time at her sewing machine. Christine loved her farm home in Virginia where she was near family and friends. She also fondly remembered her childhood home in the Tennessee hills, as well as the people, and their lifestyle.

Christine is survived by her children, David W. Sloan and his wife, Mimi and Sheila S. McLeod and her husband, Mark; two sisters, Evelyn W. Hardiman and Wanda W. Mundy; six grandchildren, Whitney S. Graham (James), Katherine Sloan, Angela Sloan, Sally McLeod Vonk (Jelmer), Kelly Bogner (Bill) and Connor McLeod and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Oct. 14, 2017 at Salem United Methodist Church on Ca Ira Road, near her home. A reception will follow for all family and friends. Pastor Billy Swan of Salem UMC will be officiating. Private interment will be held in Salem United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Flowers are welcome, as well as memorial donations to the Salem United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund. The family of Christine Sloan wishes to thank family, friends, and Dunkum Funeral Home for their kindness and support.
