Hampden-Sydney College (H-SC) is set to host Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Curator Dr. Peter Schertz on Wednesday, Sept. 27 as he demystifies Greek vases in “They Don’t Bite! How to Approach Greek Vases.”

“Most observe the art of ancient Greece through its sophisticated vases,” officials said in a press release. “However, these seemingly simple, functional objects often puzzle people of all ages. In the lecture ‘They Don’t Bite! How to Approach Greek Vases,’ Schertz examines how these vases were created and used, discusses the Greeks who made them, and delves into how we can understand Greek culture based upon their decorations and shapes.”

The release cited Schertz earned a Bachelor’s of Arts in classical languages and literature at the University of Chicago in 1987, and continued his education by receiving a Certificate of Museum Studies in 1997.

“In 2004, Schertz obtained a Ph.D. in classical art and archeology at the University of Southern California, where he wrote his dissertation ‘Seer or Victim? The Figure of Marsyas in Roman Art, Religion, and Politics,’” officials said in the release. “He has served as curator of Ancient Art since 2006 and the Jack and Mary Ann Frable Curator of Ancient Art since 2007.”

“The lecture is free open to the public, begins at 5:30 p.m. on the fourth floor of Bortz Library, and is part of H-SC’s continuing commitment to the intellectual and cultural enrichment of the Southside community,” officials said in the release.
