CRUISE IN, 5 p.m. sponsored by the Heart of Virginia Classic Auto club will be holding its last cruise in of the year at the old Schewel’s parking lot. There is no entrance fee, three trophies given to the top three people’s choice. Also, there will be a 50/50 raffle drawing. Come out to see all the cars and those with classic cars, bring them out for all to see.

DMV RABIES CLINIC, 8 a.m. at Cartersville Volunteer Rescue Squad, 1667 Cartersville Road in Cartersville, with Cindy Arledge. $8 per animal. All dogs must be on a leash and cats must be in carriers. If a booster shot is sought, proof of prior vaccination must be presented. Proceeds from the event will aid the squad’s continued service.

LEE’S LAST COUNCIL OF WAR, 7 p.m. Surrounded and increasingly desperate, Lee called his officers together for one last Council of War to determine the fate of the Confederacy, and ultimately, the future of our nation. BIRDING WALK, 8 a.m. at the Lee’s Headquarters parking area for a walk through varied habitat searching for birds. The 1.5-2 mile walk will offer opportunities to find birds in forested areas, a grassy field and along the Appomattox River. Come out to see and hear a variety of local species in their natural habitat. Dress accordingly for an outdoor walk and wear comfortable shoes. Novices to experienced birders are welcome. Binoculars will be provided, or bring your own.

THIRD ANNUAL RALPH M. HAMLETT MEMORIAL 5K RUN, 9 a.m. on the High Bridge Trail in Pamplin. This is a fast out-and-back course with professional electronic timing by Eco-X. Runners of all abilities and walkers as well as dogs on leash are welcome. Keepsake finisher medals and T-shirts awarded to all participants. Awards ceremony and brunch for runners and their families at the Pamplin Depot at 10 a.m. Top three male and female winners will receive a souvenir High Bridge railroad spike. HOMECOMING AND REVIVAL, at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, of Dillwyn, will begin its homecoming and Revival services on Sept. 17 at 11 a.m. with Pastor Michael Mosley bringing forth the morning message and the mass choir rendering music. Following the morning service, we will have a fellowship dinner. Afternoon service will begin at 2 p.m. and worship service at 2:30 p.m.. The preacher for the afternoon will be Pastor Keven Caleb, of the Thessalonia Baptist Church of Fork Union, who will be accompanied by his choir, ushers and church family. He will also be the speaker for Monday and Tuesday night. Pastor Ollie Bolden, of Petersville Baptist Church, will preach Wednesday through Friday. Nightly revival services will begin Monday, Sept. 18 through Friday, Sept. 22 and will begin with prayer and praise service at 7 p.m. and worship service at 7:30 p.m. There will be a different choir rendering music each night.

HOMECOMING AND REVIVAL, at Pisgah Baptist Church in Rice will be celebrating homecoming Sept. 17. Rev. Rick Caldwell will be guest preacher. Lunch will be served. Revival will be held Sept. 18-20. Services will begin at 7 p.m. with special music each night. Caldwell will be guest preacher. All are invited to join us in worship and fellowship.

SEPTEMBER 17-21

HOMECOMING AND REVIVAL, at Glenn Memorial Baptist Church, 146 Harris Creek Road, in Prospect. Homecoming will be Sunday, Sept. 17, with morning service beginning at 10:45 a.m. Pastor Jim Schwerdtfeger will bring the message and there will be special music as well as a history of the church presented. A covered-dish fellowship meal will follow the service. That afternoon at 3 p.m., there will be special music on the church lawn, weather permitting. This music will be presented by Paul McClinden, of Spring Creek Baptist church. All are asked to bring a lawn chair to enjoy the music. Revival services will begin Monday, Sept. 18 and run through Thursday, Sept. 21, beginning each evening at 7 p.m. Various ministers from the community will be bringing the evening messages. Everyone is welcome.

EDUCATOR TRAINING WORKSHOP, 9:30 a.m. of the Creek Freaks. This training equips educators with the knowledge and skills to deliver fun and effective watershed education lessons to youth. The workshop will cover both indoor and outdoor classroom curriculum regarding creek and stream health. FALL FOLIAGE VAN TOUR, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Meet at Farmville Plaza 15 minutes before the start time of the van tour and get your cameras ready. Come look at all of the beautiful shades of red, orange, and yellow on the trees of High Bridge Trail. Lunch will be provided. Fee of $25 per person. The cap for this tour is 12 people. DOG WALK, 10 a.m. at North Carolina Monument Pull Off. Enjoy a fall-time walk through the park with your dog along the approximately 1.5 mile loop. Wear appropriate shoes for walking in the woods. All dogs must be on a leash.

ALL NATIONS ANNUAL FAMILY AND FRIENDS WEEKEND, will kick off with “Churching in the Park” event at the Parkview Gardens Apartments at 3 p.m. There will be music, free food, testimonies, dancing and great preaching. Keynote speaker will be the Elder Justin Smith from Chicago, Illinois. On Sunday, the church will observe their annual and Family and Friends Day at 3 p.m. The Keynote speaker will be the national Evangelist Suzie Wright from Petersburg. There will be awesome singing, praise dancing, preaching and door prizes.

GATHERING AT THE FLAG POLE, 7:30 a.m. at Appomattox Christian Academy, in honor of “See You at the Pole” day at the Main ACA Campus, 1916 Redfields Road, in Appomattox. Coffee and a sweet treat will be served followed by the gathering around the pole for prayer at 8:15 a.m. All are invited to attend.

COMMUNITY CARD PLAYING, 2-4 p.m. on the second and fourth Thursday of every month at Brookview Lodge at The Woodland. The events is open to all ages, free and open to the public.

SIXTH ANNUAL LANTERN TOURS, 6:30 p.m. Groups of 30 will be guided through the park to six stops where participants can step back in time and explore the village by lantern light. Tickets are $10 and should be reserved in advance. Participants can choose the time: 6:30, 6:50, 7:10, 7:30, 7:50 or 8:10 p.m. The presentations are appropriate for kids age 6 and above. All tour groups are accompanied by knowledgeable guides and light refreshments are included in the Visitor Center at the close of each tour. 1ST ANNUAL THOR’S HAMMER FESTIVAL, 11 a.m. at The Barn, 11851 W. James Anderson Highway, in Buckingham. Cheer your firefighters as they compete to win. Register a team, enter the cookoff and get tickets. Chili cook-off categories include, best firehouse chili, best red chili, vegetarian, best no-beans, best theme/setup and best all around chili wins two tickets to see Zac Brown in concert Oct. 7. OPPORTUNITY FUND SKEET CLASSIC, 8 a.m. at the Holiday Lake 4-H Educational Center in Appomattox for graduating high school seniors in Southside Electric Cooperative’s (SEC) service area. The individual registration fee for the skeet shoot is $75, while squads of five can sign up for $325. All participants must provide their own guns and ammunition, and skeet shooters of all levels are welcome. The event is limited to the first 50 participants, who must register in advance. The deadline to sign up is Sept. 26. The guest preacher will be Elder Georgia Colbert of Windsor Mill, Maryland. This year’s theme is “P.U.S.H. (Pray Until Something Happens)” with the scripture reference Philippians 4:6.

VIRGINIA CHILDREN’S BOOK FESTIVAL FUNDRAISER, 11 a.m.-10 p.m. at Charley’s Waterfront Cafe in Farmville. Ten percent of the day’s profits benefit the Virginia Children’s Book Festival (VCBF). The VCBF is a free three day event that serves all of Virginia’s children. Those interested are invited to come by Charley’s to keep the VCBF free for all and to get more information about the festival. The VCBF, hosted by Longwood University, is open to the public.

4-H CSI MYSTERY CAMP. Campers ages 9-13 will get the chance to work with local law enforcement to solve several mysteries. Camp will be at Holiday Lake 4-H Educational Center in Appomattox. The early bird cost is $65 if registered by October 6^th and increases to $75 if registered after Oct. 6. The cost of camp includes lodging, meals, snacks, and class materials.
