THROUGH SEPTEMBER 5

TEXAS RELIEF SUPPLIES, 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. will be taken at Central Virginia Christian School, behind McDonalds in the industrial park in Dillwyn, for new/unused supplies for hurricane victims. Supplies will be transported to Texas by Gleaning for the World, a faith-based organization that is already on the ground in Texas providing for the needs of the people. No clothes, please.

AUGUST 31

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED, 9 a.m. to clean up vegetation near the Charles Sweeney Cabin. Volunteers will remove tree limbs and small trees using hand saws. The purpose of this project is to create a better view shed the cabin for visitors to enjoy. Volunteers will be asked to use hand saws, pole saws and loppers to trim the vegetation before placing it in a pile for pick up. Equipment and gloves will be provided. Volunteers are encouraged to bring bottled water. SEPTEMBER 2

WE’VE GOT TALENT, 7 p.m. at Oakwood UMC, 1291 Columbia Road, in Columbia. An evening of fun with talent to make your heart sing, laugh and tap your toe as you leave on a “Train Bound for Glory.” A donation is asked for the church Congo Missionary, Jacques Askasa. All are invited.

STROLL THROUGH THE VILLAGE, 7 p.m. For 40 years, George Peers served as the clerk of Appomattox County court, living just down the street from the courthouse. Take a stroll through the village during this first-person living history presentation to learn about life in the village, the last Confederate artillery shots fired from his front yard and the surrender meeting. Meet at the flagpole near the village parking lot.

COOKOUT, 1 p.m. of The Farmville Allstars Baseball Team annual reunion at the 800 block of Hill Street, in Farmville. Members, fans and coaches are invited to attend.

PROVERBS 31 MAN SERVICE, 4 p.m. at Pleasant Oak Baptist Church, 807 Pleasant Oak Road, Victoria. Guest will be the Rev. Frank Watson and St. Luke Baptist Church Choir and the Gospel Traveliers of Farmville.

PAMPLIN DEPOT BARN DANCE, 6-8 p.m. at the Pamplin Train Depot, Main Street, Pamplin. Free admission and a meal $5 on the first Saturday of each month. This month’s $5 meal will be Chicken Jambalaya, corn muffins, red velvet cake and sweet tea catered by Chef Timothy. All donations made will offset expenses and building rent. All involved in the event are volunteers.

FAMILY RESEARCH, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Cumberland County Museum, sponsored by the Cumberland Historical Society. The museum is in the Old Clerk’s Office in the courthouse complex. HOMECOMING, 10 a.m. at Rocky Mount UMC, on U.S. Route 15 in Dillwyn, beginning with a song service with Smokey Wilson. Worship service will follow at 11:15 a.m. with lunch afterwards. 106TH HOMECOMING, 11 a.m. at Oakwood UMC, 1291 Columbia Road, Columbia. Guest speaker is the Rev. Robert Lewis, a former pastor. Rev. Lewis serves Hinton Avenue UMC in Charlottesville. A potluck dinner will be held after the service. Following the meal, Rev. Lewis will have a few words to share about the protests in Charlottesville on Aug. 11, of which he was a participant. All are welcome.

HOMECOMING MINISTRY SERVICE, at Lone Oak Baptist Church, 9908 Lunenburg County Road, in Keysville. The Rev. Vincent Eanes will bring the message and the choir will render the music. A fellowship dinner will be served.

WARD C & WARD D COMMUNITY MEETING, 6 p.m. at the Farmville Town Hall building, second floor in the council chambers, 116 N. Main St. to address any questions or concerns residents may have concerning their home, neighborhoods and community.

COMMUNITY PRAYER BREAKFAST, 7:30 a.m. in the Moton Museum auditorium. This breakfast is held the first Tuesday of each month.

HEART OF VA BEEKEEPERS, 7 p.m. will meet at the Prince Edward County Extension Office across from Lowe’s in Farmville. There will be a demonstration of how to make a candy board for winter feeding of honeybees. Anyone who has bees or is interested in bees is welcome. LONGABERGER BASKET BINGO, 2 p.m. sponsored by The Randolph District Volunteer Fire Department and Auxiliary, at the firehouse, located at 2145 Cumberland Road. Doors open at noon. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. There will be 20 games, raffle items, silent auction and a 50/50 raffle. All baskets are filled with donated items from local merchants. 911 NATIONAL DAY OF SERVICE AND REMEMBRANCE, 11 a.m. sponsored by The Jack Garland American Legion Auxiliary Post 32 and their community partners at the Farmville Fire Department building. The mission is to host an event on Sept. 11 to honor and remember their military families and first responders.

PROGRAM, 7 p.m. sponsored by The Friends of the Barbara Rose Johns Farmville-Prince Edward Community Library in the meeting room of the library. Guest speaker will be Dr. Christopher McGee, associate professor, children’s and young adult literature at Longwood University will speak on the subject of young adult literature.
