BUCKINGHAM — The Buckingham County Sheriff’s Office recently received complaints concerning a telephone scam in which the caller, using a computer link, has the ability to make it appear as if the call is local, falsifying where the call is originating from.

According to a press release, once the phone is answered, the caller begins with either a credit card offer or an offer to stay at a resort.

“Calls typically are placed between the hours of 5-7 p.m.,” Buckingham Sheriff William G. “Billy” Kidd Jr. said in the release. “At this time no one that we are aware of has been duped out of any money.”

The release cited that the ruse seems to get people to answer the phone when they think the call is being placed locally.

“Be aware that the technology exists to route calls this way and potential con artists will take advantage of that fact,” officials said in the release.
