THE BATTLE FOR STAUNTON RIVER BRIDGE, On June 25, 1864 a small group of Confederate soldiers and local citizens kept the Staunton River Bridge from being destroyed by a much larger Union raiding party. Join us at the Staunton River Bridge and hear how the battle unfolded while viewing features of the battlefield. BIRDING AT THE BATTLEFIELD, 7-8:30 a.m., at Staunton River Battlefield Clover Station Visitor Center, 1035 Fort Hill Trail, Randolph. Learn some identification tips and find out about the life history of the birds you see while exploring the diversity of birds at the park. CATCH ‘EM IN THE CREEK, 10 a.m.-noon, at Staunton River Battlefield Clover Station Visitor Center, 1035 Fort Hill Trail, Randolph. Take a hike to one of our creeks while learning about wetlands and their importance to the environment. Then, plunge in with nets and buckets and try to catch and identify some of the critters that live there. Please wear clothes and shoes suitable for a short hike and wading in shallow water. BIRDING WALK, 8 a.m. at the Appomattox Wayside parking area for a walk through varied habitat searching for birds. The 1.3 mile walk will offer opportunities to find birds in a large grass field, surrounded by trees. Dress accordingly for an outdoor walk, and wear comfortable shoes. Novices to experienced birders are welcome. Binoculars will be provided, or bring your own.

MOVIES AT THE MUSEUM, 6 p.m. at the Museum of the Confederacy-Appomattox. Film begins at sunset. BEACH BASH DANCE, 8 p.m. sponsored by the Cumberland Fire Department Auxiliary at the Cumberland Community Center, 11 Davenport Road, Cumberland, featuring DJ Kevin Ingle. Everyone attending must be at least 21-years-old. Soft drinks and water will be available for purchase. All proceeds will benefit the Cumberland Volunteer Fire Department.

YOUTH MUSIC AND PLAY NIGHT, 3 p.m. at Cornerstone Baptist Church, 16 Horsepen Road, Cumberland. Come out and support the Cornerstone youth. A bake sale and raffle will be held during intermission.

LITTLE PRINCE/PRINCESS-KING/QUEEN CONTEST, 3 p.m. at the New Witt Baptist Church. The special guest is the United for Christ Gospel Singers of Chase City. This service is being presented by the New Witt Sunday School. New Witt is located on Farmville Highway South, the Rev. Winston Bland is the Pastor.

HOMECOMING, 11 a.m. at Oak Grove Baptist Church. The preacher will be The Reverend James Johnson, a native of Buckingham County. He grew up at Oak Grove and was a member of the choir and served on the Trustee Board. Lunch will be served after the morning service.

PASTOR’S ANNIVERSARY, 3 p.m. at New Bethel Baptist Church in Meherrin. This event will celebrate the 22nd anniversary of Pastor Haney Thomas, Jr. Guest preacher will be the Rev. Dr. Ricky A. Lee, Pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Chase City. All are invited.

HOMECOMING, 3 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, Burkeville. Pastor Kim White of Bloomfield Baptist Church, Wilsons, will deliver the message along with the church family, choir, deacons and ushers.

9TH ANNUAL MEN AND WOMEN DAY, 3 p.m. at Peaks Baptist Church, 1948 Peaks Road, Prospect. Guest speaker for the program will be Minister Hilda Foster and her choir, from Gravel HIll Baptist, Amelia. All are welcome. The Rev. Otis Johnson, pastor.

ANNUAL HOMECOMING, 11 a.m. at the Old Green Creek Baptist Church. The pastor Rev. Samuel Trent will be preaching. Revival will begin the following evening July 24-28 with praise service at 7:30 p.m. The Rev. Patrick Bland will be the guest preacher for the week. Visiting choirs will render the music nightly.

JULY 23-28

HOMECOMING AND REVIVAL, at Tearwallet Baptist Church, Route 60, Anderson Highway, Cumberland. On Sunday, Homecoming Service will begin at 11 a.m. A message will be delivered and lunch will be served. Revival will begin in the afternoon at 3 p.m. Rev. Patrick Bland, pastor of the Mt. Pero Church will be rendering the message. Revival services will begin each evening at 7:30 p.m. with prayer and praise and at 8 p.m. for the service.

JULY 24-28

JUNIOR RANGERS PROGRAM, High Bridge Trail. Each day Junior Rangers will explore a different era of American History through programs, games, crafts and field trips. Children must be between the ages 9-13. Transportation is provided. Registration closed July 17.

REVIVAL SERVICES, 7:30 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, Burkeville. Worship service will begin at 8 p.m. There will be different guest revivalists and choirs throughout the week. Everyone is welcome.

JULY 26-28

ANNUAL REVIVAL, Oak Grove Baptist Church, U.S. Route 15, four miles north of Farmville, will be held Wednesday-Friday. The Wednesday night preacher will be Rev. Kevin Bolden of Charlottesville. The Zion Baptist Church Choir of Buckingham will accompany him. The Rev. Matthew Shannon, pastor of St. Paul AME in Danville, will preach Thursday night. The New Store Baptist Church Inspirational Choir will provide the music. Robert Jones, pastor of Sharon Baptist Church in Cumberland, will preach on Friday night. He will be accompanied by his mass choir. Pastor is the Rev. Dr. Kitty Smith.

JULY 28

TOAD ABODES, 6-7:30 p.m. at the Staunton River Battlefield Clover Station Visitor Center, 1035 Fort Hill Trail, Randolph. Build and paint a home for the toads in your own yard. Come decorate a toad abode while learning about the lives of our local toads. Take your toad abode home with you. All supplies will be provided. For more information call (434) 454-4312.

A GREAT CAUSE, 5-8 p.m. at Buffalo Wild Wings, Farmville. Ten percent of all net food sales will be donated to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 7059, Farmville including take-out orders. Proceeds will benefit transportation to veteran hospitals, homeless veterans, veteran direct assistance and military assistance program.

JULY 29

CANOE TRIP, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Staunton River Battlefield Clover Station Visitor Center, 1035 Fort Hill Trail, Randolph. Take a half-day canoe trip down the Staunton River. Discover the history of the river and the wildlife that needs the river to survive. Please wear clothes and shoes suitable for a trip on the river. Bring plenty of water and snacks. Pre-registration required by phone at (434) 454-4312. The minimum age is six years old for our trips. Closed toed shoes are required.

DOG WALK, 10 a.m. for a casual walk along one of the parks trails beginning at Appomattox Wayside pull off. Enjoy a summertime walk through the park with your dog along the approximately 1.3 mile loop trail. Please wear appropriate shoes for walking in the woods. All dogs must be on a leash.

JULY 29-30

PALLAS ATHENA LADIES AID SOCIETY, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. at the Museum of the Confederacy-Appomattox. Join the costumed living history interpreters to explore the equipment, comfort supplies and services provided to soldiers and hospitals by aid societies during the Civil War.

JULY 30

WORSHIP AT THE LAKE, 10 a.m. at Farmville United Methodist Church. There will be a potluck lunch after the service. Please bring a lawn chair.
