Longwood University’s men’s golf team will navigate a 2017-18 schedule with 10 regular season events, including the second consecutive year with the Manor Intercollegiate. The schedule was announced last week by Lancers Head Coach Kevin Fillman.
The schedule features a return trip to seven tournaments played a season ago in five different states, including Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia.
“Our schedule this year is a definite upgrade,” said Fillman, who is entering his 21st season guiding the Longwood men’s golf program. “While I’m disappointed that we won’t be returning to defend either tournament we won last spring, our solid play throughout much of this past season earned us a couple invitations that we were thrilled to accept.”
Part of a season-opening stretch that will see the Lancers play three tournaments in three weeks, Longwood opens its season for the fourth straight season at Marshall’s Joe Feaganes Invitational at Guyan Golf & Country Club played Sept. 11-12. In addition, Longwood will travel to Eastern Kentucky’s Raising Canes Intercollegiate, Sept. 16-17, for the second straight season, as Jordan Boulton, Nick Contini and Adam Szwed look to duplicate their top 25 finishes.
Rounding out the difficult opening stretch Sept. 25-26, the Lancers will play at George Mason’s Patriot Intercollegiate where Boulton and Contini each placed among the top 20 a season ago.
The month of October will see the Lancers head to the Tar Heel State for a pair of tournaments to wrap up the fall slate. Longwood is set to play in the Elon/Phoenix Invitational from Oct. 16-17 at the par-71, Donald Ross-designed Country Club, before rounding out its fall slate Oct. 22-24 at the ODU/OBX Collegiate at Kilmarlic Golf Club in the Outer Banks.
Longwood will open its spring with five regular season events and the Big South Championship. Five of the six events will be played on golf courses familiar to the Lancers from the past two seasons.
The Lancers open the spring with four tournaments in a five-week period throughout March, highlighted by the second consecutive Manor Intercollegiate, March 30-31. The Lancers finished tied for third at the Manor Intercollegiate last season.
Longwood will make its first of three appearances in South Carolina to open the spring at the College of Charleston/Charleston Shootout, March 5-6, at the Links at Stono Ferry. In addition, the Lancers will wrap up their regular season slate at the Palmetto State at the Wofford/Coca-Cola Invitational, April 9-10, at the Country Club of Spartanburg.
In addition, the Lancers will return to the Pinehurst Intercollegiate played on Pinehurst No. 8 at the historic Pinehurst Resort after they finished tied for fourth in 2016-17. Last season, Boulton finished in third place, marking one of his five top-five finishes on the campaign.
Following a week off, Longwood will make the trek to Williamsburg to play the William & Mary/Kingsmill Intercollegiate on the illustrious River Course at Kingsmill Resort.
The Big South Championship returns to the Patriot Golf Club in South Carolina, April 20-22, where Longwood looks to improve upon its sixth place finish from a season ago.
