A Meherrin man is charged with second degree attempted murder and shooting into an occupied dwelling after police said he was shooting at people in the 4000 block of Meherrin Road.
The arrest of James R. Scott came after “after a brief standoff” with police, according to Prince Edward Sheriff Wesley W. Reed, who said that when police responded to the incident Saturday, Scott was brandishing a gun outside a home.
“Deputies were successful in convincing the subject to surrender peacefully,” Reed said in the press release.
According to police, the incident stemmed from an ongoing dispute between Scott and the victim.
In addition to second degree attempted murder and shooting into an occupied dwelling charges, Scott is charged with assault, brandishing a firearm and reckless handling of a firearm.
Scott is being held at Piedmont Regional Jail without bond, police said. Sgt. Brandon Yoder is the investigating officer.
