Batteau Festival begins Sunday

The 2017 Batteau Festival will be held June 17-24. This Saturday, the batteau boats will begin in Lynchburg, then on Sunday, they will be at Bent Creek. During the rest of the week, the boats will be at Wingina on Monday, Howardsville on Tuesday, Scottsville on Wednesday, Solite on Thursday, Cartersville on Friday and ending at Goochland on Saturday.

Happy birthday wishes go out this week to Peggy Bickford, of New Canton,  Saturday; Eileen Reynolds, of Buckingham,  Sunday; Irene Shumaker, of Farmville, and Ann Jones on Thursday, June 22.

Father’s Day is on Sunday. Let us thank God for our Godly dads who set examples with good Christian morals and are the heads of our homes providing leadership.

The 2017 Martin Family Reunion was held Saturday at Jones Chapel Baptist Church of Cumberland. A large crowd was in attendance and enjoyed great food, fun and fellowship. This was the family of the late Clarence and Ruby Martin, of Dillwyn.

The Cumberland County Community Food Bank, partnering with the Central Virginia Food Bank, a FeedMore Program of Richmond, will distribute food to Cumberland County residents, including Cartersville residents,  Monday from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. or until all food is gone. The distribution will be located at the old Cumberland County Elementary School Cafeteria next door to the gym located at 1874 Anderson Hwy. You must have already registered to get food, or you must see the director, Jerry Seal. All food recipients are asked to please bring bags. Remember that during the extreme summer heat, check on your neighbors and pets. Be sure to stay hydrated, and do your work outside early morning or late evening.
