PRINCE EDWARD — A single-vehicle crash killed a 76-year-old Farmville man Saturday on Abilene Road in Prince Edward County.

According to State Police, Robert C. Carwile, a passenger in the 1994 Chevrolet Blazer, died at the scene. “The driver of the vehicle fled the scene on foot,” police said in the press release. “State Police are following up on leads concerning the identity of the driver.”

The crash was reported about about one-tenth of a mile west of Route 705 on Abilene Road when the driver lost control of the vehicle and ran off the right side of the road. The SUV struck a culvert, a tree and a sign before coming to rest.

The accident took place at about 2:45 p.m. Senior Trooper A.S. Trombley responded.

State Police say Carwile was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
