4-H camps open to youth

Keep the fun rolling this summer with 4-H activities. Buckingham Extension Services are offering a junior 4-H overnight camp at Holiday Lake 4-H center June 12-16. The cost is $230 and discounts apply for additional immediate family members. Youth from Buckingham, Charlotte and Prince Edward will spend a week of fun-filled activities at 4-H Camp. Classes include swimming, archery, rock wall climbing, canoeing, leathercraft and more. Enjoy recreation every afternoon and exciting evening programs including two campfires. Summer is a great time to continue healthy exercise. Central Virginia Community Health Center has weekly activities to help you stay in shape. Come out on Tuesday at 10 a.m. for Tai Chi; Wednesday at 5 p.m. for Yoga; and Thursday for country line dancing at 10 a.m. and Body Attack at 6 p.m.
Ellis Acres is hosting a golf tournament Sunday from 8:30-9:30 a.m. The event will be held at the Manor Golf Club, located at 872 Manor House Dr., Farmville.
The National Garden Club has designated June 4-10 as National Garden Week. The Buckingham-Dillwyn Garden Club will be celebrating National Garden Week with a display at the Buckingham County Public Library. The display will provide information on the club projects and its affiliation with the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs and the National Garden Club. In addition, the club will hold a picnic at Ellis Acres on Monday, June 12 at noon to celebrate National Garden Week and the 85th year of the founding of the club.

So, you think you want to farm? Discover resources and information for making informed agricultural decisions on potential crops/livestock and run through a financial simulation of your first years farming. Come out Friday to SPAREC (2375 Darvills Road, Blackstone) from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. where lunch will be provided. This event will feature the Virginia Cooperative Extension, insurance specialists, financial institution, government assistance agencies, agricultural equipment dealers and agricultural cooperatives. Virginia Cooperative Extension presents “Ag Innovations for Small Farms.” This free event will be held on June 15 from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. at the VSU Randolph Farm Field Day in Petersburg, and includes a light breakfast and boxed lunch. Randolph Farm will be open to the public for this exciting opportunity to learn about the latest trends, research and proven techniques designed especially to help small, limited resource, urban and beginning farmers. United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) representatives will be on hand to explain how their agency resources can offer services and support for a wide variety of operations. Highlights include aquaculture, mobile processing unit, small farm outreach, hops and high tunnels, berry production, USDA resources and urban agriculture.
