Houston Garland Hatcher Jr., 62, passed away May 22, 2017 at home in Chesapeake. Born in Farmville, he was the son of Houston and Doris Hatcher.

Garland was a proud grandfather to five beautiful children, Tyler Phelps-Hatcher, Reaghan Hatcher, Chase Cummings (Jason’s) Kirkland Hatcher and Emerson Grace Hatcher (Stephen’s).

He loved to share their many accomplishments, large or small, to anyone who would listen.

Garland’s cousin Kim Yeatts was like a brother as well as many friends who thought of him as a brother. His large extended family in Farmville held a special place in his heart. He looked forward to the annual family gatherings.

Garland proudly worked for Norfolk Naval Shipyard for over 30 years and was looking forward to retirement so he could spend more time on the golf course, his true passion. Garland was an avid golfer and longtime baseball coach in the community. He enjoyed spending time with his family and sitting around sharing stories with friends. Garland was very well-known for his humor; his smile was infectious and his signature laugh could fill a room. He will be greatly missed by so many.

He is survived by his parents, Houston and Doris Hatcher; wife of 42 years, Maureen Hatcher; he was blessed with two sons, Jason R. Hatcher, his wife Wendy, and Stephen G. Hatcher, his wife Shilah; sister Teresa Hatcher Adams and her husband Jimmy Adams.
