Waterworks Players will take Southside audiences from the sorority house to the halls of justice with its spring production of Legally Blonde: the Musical, which opens on March 31.
“Based on Amanda Brown’s novel that was made into a move of the same name, Legally Blonde is the story of Elle Woods, who enrolls at Harvard Law School to win back her ex-boyfriend, Warner,” production organizers said in a press release.
“When the show opened on Broadway in 2007, it received seven Tony and 10 Drama Desk Award nominations. In London, the production was nominated for five Olivier Awards, winning three, including Best New Musical.”
“Anna Hicks is cast as the famously perky Elle Woods, who appears to have it all. Her life is turned upside down, however, when her boyfriend, Warner, played by Mason Patrick, dumps her so he can start getting serious about his life and attend Harvard Law,” organizers said. “Determined to get him back, Elle uses her charm to get into Harvard Law, but she must learn how to spar with Professor Callahan, portrayed by Waterworks’ veteran actor Jordan Whiley, to find her place.”
Organizers say Elle also learns “that there are challenges from fellow law students. Enid, played by Kolby Grimsley, is an outspoken and overbearing law student who was active in Greenpeace. Vivienne, portrayed by Olivia Pedigo, is also image-conscious, deeply competitive and throws a lot of shade at Elle. By contrast, Kevin Koons as Emmett, a recent top alum of Harvard Law and assistant in Professor Callahan’s class, lends Elle a helping hand.”
Other cast members include Madelyn Magnotti as Brooke, a fitness instructor accused of murdering her wealthy husband. Miriam Loya plays Paulette, Elle’s friend and favorite manicurist who provides sound advice. Greg Tsigaridas is Kyle, a UPS delivery man. Rachel Witham, Laura Millon, and Haley Mizelle play Elle’s Delta Nu sisters. The show also includes a large ensemble that includes Ann Marie Arbuckle, Kaylie Bennett, Leigh Lunsford, Christy Moore, Hannah Boswell, Christian Huggard, Kim Boswell, Garrett Reese, Robert Morris and Michael Tomkies.
“The creative team of Mary Jo Stockton (director), Don Blaheta (assistant director), Zachary Glasscock (choreographer) and Carole Harper (musical director) has assembled an excellent cast of actors from Hampden-Sydney College, Longwood University, University of Virginia Law School and the local community.”
Audience members will feel like they are part of the production, organizers say.
According to the release, Waterworks’ intimate space plays a key role in this production as “the audience feels part of the story telling as they surround three sides of the stage. There aren’t many other theatres that can match this type of experience for viewing than Waterworks Players.”
