The day of small things

The Bible indicates in Zechariah 4 that we should not despise the day of small things. Every day is not going to feel epic or include a major event on the schedule.

But as he spoke on Zechariah 4:10, noted English preacher Charles Spurgeon said that it is usually God’s way to begin His great works with small things.

This passage came to mind as I reflected upon the project undertaken by the Friends of the Farmville-Prince Edward Community Library to populate the community with Little Free Libraries.

As described at LittleFreeLibrary.org, a Little Free Library is a “take a book, return a book” free book exchange. The little libraries come in many shapes and sizes, the most common version being a small wooden box of books.

It may not seem like much in the grand scheme, but it has been like a small stone that hits the water, causing a significant ripple effect.

Little Free Library (LFL) is a nonprofit organization with a global reach. Its website noted that as of November 2016, there are more than 50,000 registered Little Free Library book exchanges in all 50 U.S. states and more than 70 countries around the world.

Vicky Page, who is vice chair of the Friends of the Farmville-Prince Edward Community Library, said the group’s project to work with LFL started as a method of helping the underserved and unserved in the county to have access to reading material.

“We now have Little Free Libraries in every district of the county, including Farmville,” Page said.

A great work has resulted from this effort, and I commend the Friends for not despising the day of small things.
