Has the Town of Dillwyn hired a clerk or treasurer yet?

The Dillwyn Town Council continues to consider candidates for the position of town clerk/treasurer following the retirement of longtime clerk Peggy Johnson.

According to Mayor Linda Venable Paige, the town council placed an advertisement in The Herald on Feb. 15 and Feb. 17 seeking for applicants.

Paige said six people have applied for the position and interviewed, and council has been considering and discussing which candidate would be best suited for the part-time position.

“We had candidates that had a wide array of varied experiences,” said Paige. “There were a couple of people (who stood out) and so we’re looking at them.”

Paige said the individual hired must be honest, show integrity, must be a people person and have good accounting skills.

“It’s a hard decision to make. When you have people who are qualified for the job and you have to narrow it down it’s difficult,” said Paige. “Sometimes you wish you could have two people because (they both) fit the qualification.”

Johnson announced her retirement in early February. Her final day was Feb. 17. She was appointed to the position in 2003 and said, at the age of 69, the time had come to retire.

“She served well as treasurer — that was her truth strength,” Paige previously said of Johnson.

Paige is currently acting as clerk/treasurer in addition to her role as mayor until the vacancy can be filled.

Paige hopes a decision will be made within the next two weeks regarding filling the vacancy.
