Appomattox Court House National Historic Park invites the community to join park staff for fun runs and nature walks on the park’s history trail.
Fun runs of 1.5 to 3-mile distances will take place Wednesdays, March 8 and 15 at 6 p.m.
A St. Patrick’s Day fun run/walk will take place on Friday, March 17 at 6 p.m. A nature walk of 1.5-2 miles will take place Saturday, March 11 at 8 a.m.
For fun runs, meet park staff at the North Carolina Monument pull-off located on Route 24 East. On March 8, meet park staff at the Lee’s Headquarters pull-off located on Route 24. Dogs are welcome on a leash. “Both loops combine the natural beauty of the park and the hallowed ground in which fighting in the area directly led to the surrender of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee to Union Gen. Ulysses S. Grant on April 9, 1865. Runners, joggers and walkers are welcome,” park officials said in a press release.
For nature walks, join park staff at the pull-off for Lee’s Headquarters located on Route 24. Dogs are welcome on a leash. “The trail is moderate in difficulty with a few rolling hills. The trail begins following the footsteps of … Lee who chose this site for his last headquarters and last council of war on the day before he surrendered to … Grant,” park officials said. “The course continues onto the nature trail where several varieties of plant life and possible animal life can be observed. Then the trail loops back past the Sweeney Prizery, the oldest building on park grounds, before heading back to the parking lot.”
