Farmville Volunteer Fire Department Chief Andrew Goss is a true public servant — one this community should be grateful for.

Goss will resign his post next week to take a new job as a helicopter pilot with his current employer, Virginia State Police.

Goss has done wonders for the people of Farmville and his brother and sister firefighters in Farmville. He’s a leader and someone who many in the department and in this community have looked up to for some time.

We’re going to miss him.

The new position, according to Goss, is based out of Lynchburg and involves search and rescue, surveillance and other law enforcement purposes.

“I am extremely excited about it,” Goss said. “The opportunity to fly for a living and doing it every day has been a dream of mine my whole life.”

We applaud Goss for living his dream and continuing to serve and protect the people across the commonwealth.

“Andrew’s done a great job, not only as state trooper, but as fire chief. The improvement to the department is unbelievable, the training and everything,” Farmville Town Manager Gerald Spates said. “Our department is very well-qualified to take on anything, and I think that’s (due) in part to his efforts.”

We offer our thanks and admiration to Goss for all he’s done for the department and community.
