Several Buckingham County Elementary School students have been installed into the newly established chapter of the National Elementary Honor Society (NEHS).

During the ceremony, held in the gymnasium at the Carter G. Woodson Education Complex, educators Christina Almond, Tracy Bowles, Cathy Lightfoot and Kelly Lane explained the four tenants of the NEHS: scholarship, responsibility, service and leadership, respectively.

Fourth-grade teacher Linda Ruffner, the club’s faculty advisor, presided over the member pledge and induction.

“We have such wonderful students who are high-achieving, responsible leaders,” she told The Herald following the event, which was marked by a reception for parents and guardians of the students. “These students want to be involved in activities above and beyond the regular school experience. The Honor Society provides an opportunity for these students to work together on service projects to benefit the school and community.”

According a handout to parents, NEHS was established in 2008.

“NEHS recognizes students in both public and non-public elementary schools for their outstanding academic achievement and demonstrated personal responsibility,” the document read. “Through NEHS, students provide meaningful service to the school and community and develop essential leadership skills.”
