Art and design educator Andrea Alvarez will present “Is the ‘Red’ You See the Same as the ‘Red’ I See?” at 3 p.m. Jan. 29 in the Atkinson Museum at Hampden-Sydney College. During her lecture, which is sponsored by Central Virginia Arts (CVA), Alvarez will talk about the experience of color in art.

“Color is a significant part of how we view our world,” CVA officials said in a press release. “Perhaps most noticeably, it impacts how we view art. An artist’s color choices can dictate the mood of an artwork, its appeal to art collectors, its neighbors in a gallery and its impression on viewers.”

For example, officials said, looking closely at the Virginia Museum of Fine Art’s collection can facilitate a discussion of how different people experience color, the factors contributing to those differences and the many differing ways color has been defined.

Alvarez is a doctoral candidate in art history at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts where she also earned her M.A. She earned a B.A. in art history from the College of William and Mary and is the current director of exhibitions at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Depot Gallery.

The lecture is free and open to the public.
