DECEMBER 31

WATCH NIGHT SERVICE, 10 p.m. at Jericho Baptist Church (formerly Race Street Church). All are welcome to come and usher in the New Year praising God. There will be a word delivered by the pastor and the choir will render music ministry.

COMMUNITY WATCH NIGHT SERVICE, 6 p.m. at First Liberty Baptist Church, Dillwyn. The Rev. Paul Wilson, pastor of Union Hill and Union Grove Baptist Churches, will be the speaker.

WATCH NIGHT SERVICE, 10 p.m. at The Apostolic Faith Church of All Nations. Dr. Wendy Lyle-Jones will deliver the preached word for this service. New Year’s Day Service will begin at 12 noon. Pastor Betty Jones welcomes all to attend.

WATCH NIGHT SERVICE, 10 p.m. at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Cumberland. Guest will be Mrs. Annie Minter and the Divine Voices. All are welcome to join in fellowship.

WATCH NIGHT, 9:30 p.m. at Rocky Mount Baptist, 919 Stoney Point Road, Cumberland. The Rev. Sandra Gray will be speaker along with Denise and the Traveling Aires. All are welcome.

JANUARY 1

ANNUAL CHRISTMAS CANTATA, 11 a.m. at Oakwood UMC in Cumberland. “O Holy Night” will be sung by the choir.

FIRST DAY HIKES AT HIGH BRIDGE, 2 p.m. A ranger will guide a short easy hike across High Bridge and back. Total length of the hike is approximately 1 mile. At 3 p.m. a more strenuous hike will begin that guides participants to a rarely visited part of the park along an abandoned rail line constructed to divert traffic when High Bridge was out of service for maintenance in 1870. Total distance is almost 2 miles and varies from easy to strenuous in places. The friends group for the park will be present with refreshments and a warm campfire.

WORSHIP SERVICE, 11 a.m. at Jericho Baptist Church to last only one hour — Hour of Power format. All are welcome.

JANUARY 2

STORY TIME, 10:15 a.m., every Monday at the Farmville-Prince Edward branch library for children ages 0-5. Rhymes, fingerplays and stories help get kids on track for school and socialize with other children. This event also takes place every Tuesday morning at 10:30 a.m.

JANUARY 3

BEEKEEPERS TO MEET, 7 p.m. at the at the Prince Edward County Extension Office across from Lowe’s in Farmville. Chris Arbo, a Buckingham resident and illustrator of the book, “In the Trees, Honey Bees,” is scheduled to speak. Anyone who has bees or is interested in bees is welcome. BEEKEEPING BASIC WORKSHOP, 6:30 p.m. at the Cumberland Extension Office, Route 60 across from Cumberland Middle School Complex. Topics covered will include general bee information, basic equipment, timelines, social order, bee biology and further education opportunities. POLAR PLUNGE LUNCH, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Bojangle’s of Farmville, 1501 S. Main St. Hosted by Unit Director Carlos Holland to help raise money for Special Olympics Area 12, which includes Buckingham, Cumberland and Prince Edward counties. Johann Greer, of Area 12, a few Special Olympics Athletes and Team Barnhill Capt. Bob “Sunshine” Barnhill will be there to meet and greet.

YOUTH BOOK SWAP, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Farmville-Prince Edward Branch Library. Start fresh in the new year by bringing in gently used books from home and trade them in for “new to you” books. Board books, picture books, chapter books and any other book intended for children or teens are welcome.

JANUARY 26

EVENING STORY TIME, 7 p.m. at the Farmville-Prince Edward Branch Library for all ages. Pajamas are encouraged, but not required for this quiet story time where children can unwind before bed with books, rhymes and activities.
