Gov. Terry McAuliffe signed an order Tuesday instructing the secretaries of the electoral boards in the counties making up State Senate District 22 — including Buckingham, Cumberland and Prince Edward — to set a special election for Jan. 10 to fill the seat vacated by Sen. Tom Garrett.
Garrett is a Republican from Buckingham.
Voters elected Garrett to Virginia U.S. Congressional District 5, replacing Rep. Robert Hurt, a Republican who announced nearly a year ago he would not seek re-election.
McAuliffe’s order stated the last day for filing as a candidate for the seat will be Monday (Dec. 5) at 5 p.m.
This is a developing story. We will have more information as we receive it and in Friday’s edition of The Farmville Herald.
