Speakers lined up for symposium

The Piedmont Area Veterans Council and Community Resources (PAVC-CR) now has an “array” of speakers lined up for its Agent Orange symposium set for Dec. 10, 1-4 p.m. at the Steps Center, 225 Industrial Park Road in Farmville. The symposium will include a panel of Vietnam veterans including Marie Sweeney, David Stokes, Shorty Osborn, Douglas Randolph, Otto Davis, Bill Mitchell, Tom Hicks and possibly others.

In addition:

• Dr. Michael Lund — speaking about his “Home and Abroad” writing program.

• VVA Chapter 196 President David Stokes — speaking about Agent Orange effects and honoring the Vietnam veterans with a commemorative medal.

• James McCleod of Providence Farm — talking about the REBOOT program.

• Gail Stokes, AVVA Chapter 196 — will speak about her group, the Associates of Vietnam Veterans of America.

• Kenny Rowe — will play music and sing.

Also, a number of Cumberland County Public School students will seat and serve drinks and refills to veterans and their family members. A Cumberland student will also sing the National Anthem. Later, PAVC-CR President Sharon Chandler will award certificates to the student volunteers.

American Legion Post 16 veteran service officers will be on hand to answer questions about Veterans Affairs claims for benefits and compensation.

A Salem Agent Orange Healthcare Specialist will speak about Veterans Affairs medical care.

Also during the ceremony, PAVC-CR Vice President Dennis Merkle will honor the spouses and caregivers of Vietnam Veterans. Corsages will be presented by PAVC-CR Co-Founder Sarah Dunn and board members Wendy Kirk-Chumley and Tana Knott.

The symposium is free and open to the public and is designed to educate about Agent Orange exposure and its effects on Vietnam veterans’ health and the health of their children and grandchildren.
