Seven Tigers named All-ODAC in football

The Hampden-Sydney College football team had seven players earn All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) honors as announced by the conference office. Headlining the selections are two first-team picks in senior wide receiver Owen Costello (South Riding/Paul VI) and senior punter Jordan Chalkley (Richmond/St. Christopher’s).

Senior offensive lineman Daniel Fogleman (Mechanicsville/Hanover) and sophomore linebacker Bender Vaught (Ashland/Patrick Henry) earned second-team honors, and junior receiver Cam Johnson (Dillwyn/Buckingham), junior tight end Patrick Kline (New Cumberland, Pa./Trinity) and senior offensive lineman Jordan Parke (Roanoke/Hidden Valley) were named to the third team.

Randolph-Macon College running back Tre Frederick and defensive lineman Cole Burdette were named the offensive and defensive players of the year, respectively, while the Yellow Jackets’ Head Coach Pedro Aruzza was named the Coach of the Year. Guilford College wide receiver Tyriek Russell earned ODAC Rookie of the Year honors, and Washington and Lee University linebacker Max Garrett was named the ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Costello had the best season of his career, leading the Tiger receivers with 62 catches for 866 yards and eight touchdowns. He averaged 86.6 receiving yards per game — which led the ODAC — and 14.0 yards per catch while hitting the 100-yard mark four times, including a 154-yard performance against The Catholic University of America. Additionally, he rushed 14 times for 113 yards.

Chalkley had a strong year punting the ball, averaging a league-high 42.8 yards-per-punt. Of his 44 punts, he pinned ten inside the 20-yard line and kicked a season-long 63-yard punt against Emory & Henry College.
