A Cumberland County High School student suffered minor injuries during an altercation involving another student with a knife at school on Nov. 17.
According to Cumberland Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Travis Gilliam, who also serves as the school’s resource officer, the incident happened around 10:30 a.m.
“The one student kind of said some things that the other student got a little offended by,” Gilliam said. “And, felt like he was a little bit threatened. So he did have a knife. When he took the knife out, the other students kind of (started) backing up from him.”
Gilliam said the student received a “nick” to the arm.
“He swung it around a few times in more of a threatening manner than to actual assault,” Sheriff Darrell Hodges said. “One of the kids did receive a small nick. It was very minor.”
Gilliam said the incident remains under investigation and “charges probably will be pending.”
“There were some other students around, so we’re questioning all the students,” he said.
“We knew that it was an isolated incident,” Division Superintendent Dr. Amy Griffin said.
Griffin said the victim went to the nurse and then returned to class.
“At no time were the other students’ safety in jeopardy,” she said.
