Something to consider

After reading about Halloween “issues” in The Herald, I would like to share something the town of Dillwyn has done to make Halloween safer for trick-or-treaters and more enjoyable for residents.

In 2015, the town and chamber of commerce came up with a plan. With donations of money for candy from the chamber and the town, $1,000 worth of candy was distributed to homeowners along a portion of Dillwyn’s Main Street. The Buckingham County Sheriff’s Office was willing to close that particular area to vehicle traffic for a two-hour period. Homeowners understood the need to purchase some additional candy. If a homeowner was unable to pass out candy, volunteers were enlisted. The head count in 2015 was approximately 600.

This year, the town sent letters to local businesses and homeowners to ask if they would like to donate. The chamber has held a Super Bake Sale in the spring in order to raise funds for both years. Again, it was a great night. Appreciative parents, polite children and enthusiastic volunteers and homeowners, and almost no trash. By the way, 2016 involved 900-plus trick-or-treaters.
