Tigers lose ‘The Game,’ 48-23

The Hampden-Sydney College football team concluded its 2016 season with a 48-23 home loss to arch-rival Randolph-Macon College on Saturday in the Oldest Small School Rivalry in the South, also known as “The Game.” The Tigers trailed only 24-23 at halftime, but the Yellow Jackets scored 17 unanswered points in the third quarter to break the game open. H-SC tallied 417 yards of offense, 311 passing and 106 rushing. Alec Cobb went 25-of-53 passing for 307 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Owen Costello, pictured above with the football, led all receivers with 11 catches for 138 yards and a touchdown. He also had one rush for 59 yards. Defensively, the Tigers allowed 395 yards, 329 passing and 66 rushing. Christian Wilder led all players with eight tackles, four for a loss, to go with two sacks. The Tigers went 3-7 overall this year and 3-4 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
